03 / Living Here

Three islands, three histories.

Treasure Island’s pirate street names, Harbor Island’s former spa, and North Bay Island’s creation in 1940.

  • Parks: Ansin Family Park and Stormwater Park.

Everyday places on Treasure Island

Treasure Island’s pirate street names.

Cutlass. Buccaneer. Pirates Alley. Your next turn comes with a plot: the Village traces Treasure Island’s name and pirate-themed streets to Robert Louis Stevenson’s adventure novel. Here, a fictional treasure hunt became part of an everyday address.

The story carries into neighborhood life. Treasure Island Elementary opened in 1955, according to the school district. In 2026, the Village celebrated pupils who had stayed from pre-K through fifth grade with its Pirates Roots to Wings award. Between the street names and the school celebrations, the island has made the pirate motif its own. Look for it on your next neighborhood walk.

Harbor Island’s former spa: yoga and dinner dancing.

Harbor Island has a resort chapter behind its residential skyline. A June 1985 advertisement for Larry Paskow’s Harbor Island Spa offered yoga, tennis, swimming pools and dinner dancing, with a second week free for guests paying for one. The pitch was a whole day of recreation and company, right here on the bay.

By March 2002, Miami Today was reporting on redevelopment of the former spa site. That makes the old advertisement a window into an earlier island, not a place to book today. For a present-day visit, start with Vogel Park on West Drive or the dog park on East Drive. The island’s story continues in the places neighbors share.

  • Neighborhood: Homes along Center Bay Drive and Coquina Drive.
  • Everyday errands: Find groceries and local food stops on neighboring Treasure Island.

Questions before choosing a home

North Bay Island was dredged from the bay in 1940.

The homes in this photograph stand on land that had to be made. The Village’s comprehensive plan dates North Bay Island’s creation by dredging and seawall construction to 1940. By 1941, it says, twelve homes were built and occupied. North Bay Village incorporated in 1945; Harbor and Treasure islands joined the municipality later.

Look again at the low rooftops and the water around them. This is the Village’s early residential chapter: a small neighborhood taking shape in Biscayne Bay before the later islands joined it. The surprising part of this view is under the houses. Before anyone could settle here, the bay had to become land.
